The Save As Function

Question: How can I quickly change the name or location of a file that I'm working on? Answer: While working with documents on your computer, you will probably need to change the name of a file from time to time. You might want to give a file a name that you can recognize more easily, or you may wish make a copy with the same name so that you work on it and still have a copy of the original. These tasks can be performed from your desktop or within Windows Explorer, but if you already have the file open, there is a simpler method: the "Save As" command.

In almost all programs for Microsoft Windows, you can click on the "File" menu and then click on "Save As" to save the current document with a new name and / or to a new location. A "Save As" window should appear - you can type in a new name for the document in the "File Name" field, and use the buttons on the left (or the "Save in" field at the top) to choose a new location. You can also use this window to choose a new format for the file - E.g., if you had opened a Microsoft Word document and you wanted to save it as a Word Perfect document, you could choose that option from the "Save as type" field. Note that specific programs can usually only "Save As" specific types of files.

Once you have selected a location and a name for your file, click on the "Save" button and you're done.
