Disable Attachment Blocking

Question: Outlook Express refuses to let me open files that have been emailed to me. How can I open them?

Answer: In an attempt to help curb the spread of viruses sent through email, Microsoft configured the latest version of their Outlook Express email program to block access to any type of file which may contain a virus. This feature can be a help to users who don't know the ins and outs of email, but it can also be a problem if you know the file is clean but Outlook Express won't let you open it. It's a bit like an over-protective parent saying "If you go outside, you could get hit by a car - so never go outside!"

Fortunately, it is possible to disable Outlook Express' attachment blocking feature. NOTE: you should only disable this feature if you have a specific reason to do so or if you run up-to-date Anti-Virus software that scans your incoming email.

In Outlook Express, click on the "Tools" menu along the top of the window, then click on the word "Options." The Options window should now appear, displaying several tabs - click on the tab called "Security." Under the section called "Virus Protection," you should see a checkbox next to the words "Do not allow attachments to be saved or opened that could potentially be a virus." Click on the checkbox to the left of those words - causing it to be unchecked - and then click the "OK" button at the bottom of the window. You should now be able to open and save attachments.
