Using MSConfig

Question: How can I control what programs are run when my computer starts?

Answer: Since Windows 98, Microsoft has included a utility called MSConfig which allows you to control which programs and services Windows runs when it starts up. Many common programs such as Quicktime, MSN Messenger, and WinZip will default to running every time you start windows - this can make your computer slower to startup and wastes system resources, especially if you don't use those programs frequently.

This utility is somewhat hidden, however - to access it, click on the Start button, then click on the words "Run." In the window that appears, type "msconfig" and click on the "OK" button; the MSConfig window should now appear.

Along the top of the window there are several taps - click on the last one, called "Startup." You should now see a list of programs that run when you start your computer with check boxes beside their names - those items that have a check beside their name do run on startup, while those without a check mark are disabled. To disable a program, click on the check box to remove the check mark from it. When you are finished, click the "OK" button at the bottom - you will be asked whether you want to "Restart" or "Exit without a Restart" - you can safely choose either, but note that the changes will not take effect until you restart your computer.

Note: sometimes it's easy to tell what a program is from its name in the list, and sometimes it's more difficult. It may take some trial and error to make sure that you've disabled the correct program.
